This dog was developed by crossing a purebred Poodle with a Maltese. The Maltipoo is generally friendly and outgoing. This pup will pretend everyone in the world is their best buddy.

History

Unfortunately, not much is known about the exact origins of the Maltipoo. This mix between Poodle and Maltese was created somewhere in the United States over the past 20 to 30 years. The Maltipoo was created by breeders to be a small and affectionate companion. Their intended role is to be a pet that fits into every family’s lifestyle. The original breeders have certainly made their mark. There is no denying that the Maltipoo makes a great companion for almost any family. Both the Poodle and the Maltese are popular dog breeds so it was thought that combining the two would bring out the best in both breeds.

Character of the Maltipoo

Gentle and generally calm, the Maltipoo makes a great family companion for those who want to spend a lot of time with the dog. This dog loves his people and can bond quickly. However, this strong dog-human bond can be problematic as these dogs often suffer from separation anxiety. They can become depressed and even harm themselves by pulling their own hair or chewing their skin. The Maltipoo does best when not left alone for extended periods of time. This makes them ideal companions for the elderly or those who work from home a lot.

The Maltipoo is energetic and full of spunk, enough for all of its family members to enjoy. He likes to chase a ball or play a game with the children. The Maltipoo also gets along well with other pets. After a hard day of play, he’ll get onto your lap for some well-deserved attention and a comfortable nap. This dog is quite energetic, a short brisk walk in the morning and evening is more than enough exercise to keep the dog happy. This little dog loves to play and will happily chase a ball across the floor for hours on end. As a result, he is a great playmate for well-behaved and caring children. The Maltipoo is an ideal dog for those who live in small apartments in the city, but also like to live in the suburbs with their own garden.

Health

Since the Maltipoo is a crossbreed, it is prone to problems that affect both the Maltese and the Poodle. These health conditions can include Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, Portosystemic Shunt, Patellar Luxation, Progressive Retinal Atrophy, Epilepsy, and White Shaker Syndrome. Skin issues can also be a problem with this cross especially if the dog has white coat. Food and skin allergies, as well as increased skin sensitivity, are something to watch out for in these dogs. So it’s worth booking regular and consistent appointments with a vet to catch any of these potential issues quickly and treat them immediately.

Grooming

Maltipoo coats can vary widely. Some are smooth, while others are wavy or curly. The colors are varied from white to black and everywhere in between. Brushing is essential to keep the Maltipoo’s coat in top condition. It should be brushed several times every week to prevent tangles or mats from forming. A shampoo with a deep conditioner is needed every month. The Maltese and the Poodle also need professional grooming, so it’s likely their offspring are no different. Expect to take them to a groomer from time to time to keep their soft coat in good condition.
