How to take my animal by car? Pets

on

There are numerous situations in which we have to transport an animal by car . For their safety and yours, it is important that you know the correct way to do it. We take care that you have all the information. It’s easier than you think!

Why are there rules for traveling with an animal by car?

It is crucial that you understand that this is a problem that goes beyond just getting caught and fined. An animal that goes in a car is considered as one more occupant of the same and, therefore, must be just as restrained and protected as the rest. But, in addition to your safety, an animal loose in a vehicle implies certain risks :

  • It’s a distraction
  • It can interfere with the operation of the car: stepping on the pedals, preventing the gear change from being used…
  • It affects the safety of other citizens, for example, when a dog goes with its head out of the window.
  • It is a factor that aggravates the impact of the rest of the occupants in the event of sudden braking.

Regulations for traveling with animals in a car

It is clear that the regulation of the presence of an animal in a car is essential. It is, above all, to use approved retention systems that have been subjected to the demanding European regulations ( ECE R17 or DIN 75410-2).

Basically, there are three systems available to travel with an animal by car:

  1. Carriers : Probably the safest method. In the case of large animals, you must place it in the trunk, resting on the backrest and placed crosswise. If it is smaller, it must go on the floor of the rear seats in the passenger compartment. Never put it on the seat, held by the seat belt.
  2. Harnesses : Only recommended for dogs. If you decide on this system, take into account the length of the animal and the Isofix devices . But, above all, value this option thinking that if they get caught on your dog’s collar you will not immobilize him, with the consequent risk that his mobility implies.
  3. Grilles : They enable a separate space between the trunk and the rest of the vehicle. They are only recommended for large animals. It is important that you check the stability of the grid and, also, of the backrest to which it is attached. In this sense, the safest grilles are those that occupy from the floor to the ceiling, complying with the DIN 75410-2 standard.

Tips for traveling with animals

Finally, regardless of the retention system you choose, we offer you some recommendations that will be very useful:

  • Gradually get your pet used to traveling by car , using treats and caresses to reinforce their behavior.
  • Consult your veterinarian if it is convenient to medicate him.
  • Do not change your diet the day you travel.
  • Plan stops so you can air out and take a walk.
  • Be very careful with heatstroke , never leave him alone in a stationary car.
